Black Friday – A day full of discounts and shopping craziness

If never you did come across Black Friday, you might probably live on a desert island. Actually, “Black Friday” is absolutely everywhere every November. During that, you have a unique opportunity to buy what your heart desires at prices that you would never ever think about the other days. But where did the tradition start? And is actually everything so good as it seem?

What Black Friday is and where did it come from

Every year, Black Friday takes place on the day after North American Thanksgiving. This tradition originated in the US and goes back to the 1960s. The nickname "black" has an interesting history there. It was first used by the police in Philadelphia to describe the chaos that happened when the crowds regularly filled the streets and shops after Thanksgiving. But later, it was given a more positive connotation -it meant a turnaround in the profits for merchants, as Black Friday often caused the numbers on their books to go from red data (loss) to black data (profit).

Today, Black Friday is about kicking off the pre-Christmas season in the shops. By providing big, even huge, discounts. In the United States, this Friday is so busy that there are often crowded streets in many cities and stores are packed up to the roof with people. Many people even stay overnight in front of the stores to be the first ones inside early in the morning when they open.

Black Friday has no long been only an American event - thanks to the globalisation and the expansion of e-shops, it has become a global shopping “feast”. The European stores, including the Czech ones, have quickly realised that customers like to take the opportunity to shop at discounts. Every year, thousands of shops in the Czech Republic join this "discount marathon" and present offers to attract as many customers as possible.

Really good deals or just a customer trap?

The stores prefer to use Black Friday to entice the customers with seemingly huge discounts. And now you should be careful. It not all gold what glitters, and not every discount is real.

Among the unfair practices that appear every year is, e.g., this one: The store prices rise imperceptibly a few weeks before Black Friday, and then suddenly, they fall back to their original value. It looks like a good deal, but only because they have a big "-60%" sign on them.

Therefore, it is worth taking your mobile phone, checking the prices on the online comparison sites or from competitors and finding out whether it is a really good deal. Nowadays, it takes only a few seconds. You just need to be careful.

How not to get fooled?

When shopping on Black Friday, decide with your head, not with your emotions. Make a list of what you really need and do not run after every "deal" that appears. This will avoid the situations when you are just thinking, "Did we really need this at home?" the other day.

Black Friday as a great opportunity, but with a reasonable rate

Keeping common sense, Black Friday can be a great opportunity to save money. But take this "feast" with caution. Do not get fascinated by marketing gimmicks, rather think about what you really want and rely on time-proven manufacturers and retailers.
